It is a peri-urban beach located in the Monte area, next to the estuary formed by the San Pedro estuary, characterised by a rocky natural environment.
La Maruca has the peculiarity of alternating sand and rocks, which makes it an area of impressive beauty that enjoys a completely natural environment.
There is no sandy surface at high tide. The users of this beach use the rocks at the entrance where the toilets are located (shower, footbath and handrail for access to the sea on a concrete ramp).
Access is easy as there is a large parking area, but it can also be reached by the municipal bus service, which has a stop nearby. Other options for accessing this beach are walking or cycling.
It has little swell, making it the perfect place to relax, sunbathe and enjoy the sea breeze.
This beach offers a beautiful promenade with stunning views, as well as typical restaurants where you can enjoy the rich seafood gastronomy of Santander.
In addition, on the peninsula that borders this beach is the San Pedro del Mar battery, documented since 1660. This infrastructure was built to protect Santander from pirate attacks and remained active until after the War of Succession (1701-1714) between the Bourbons and the Habsburgs. After several modifications in the 18th and 19th centuries, the last one was carried out in 2010 and 2011 to house the Coastal Interpretation Centre. This modern space, inaugurated in 2011, permanently houses the exhibition "Coastal Heritage of Cantabria", which allows visitors to learn about the characteristics of the Cantabrian coast, as well as the flora and fauna that inhabit it and the different uses that humans have given it over time.
If you decide to visit La Maruca Beach, remember to respect the natural environment and leave it as clean as you found it.
