Second Beach of El Sardinero

Beaches of Santander

Also known as "La Segunda", this is the largest beach in the municipality. With a length of 1,000 metres and an average width of 80 metres, this beach has fine golden sand, bathed by the blue waters of the Cantabrian Sea.

It is separated from Primera Playa by the Piquío Gardens. However, at low tide you can walk along the shore from this beach to La Concha, crossing the First Beach, making it a promenade of more than a kilometre and a half.

In the years when the First was the beach for the nobility, the Second was reserved for the common people and had a spa, called Castañeda, which is why it is still called "Playa de Castañeda" (Castañeda Beach).

In order to enjoy a comfortable day at the beach, there are sun loungers and parasols for hire, as well as a children's play area with monitors.

It is located next to the Mesones Park and has a large parking area, but it can also be reached by public transport or by bicycle via the cycle lanes.

It has areas for sports, including paddle games and another area for other sports, such as volleyball.

Nearby, there is a wide range of restaurants where you can taste the exquisite typical dishes of Santander while enjoying unbeatable views, or cool off with a homemade ice cream. Among other establishments, it is worth mentioning that, with privileged views of the Segunda, you will find the Michelin-starred restaurant El Serbal.

Due to its moderate swell, it is an ideal beach for surfing. In fact, on the 10th of March 1963, it was the beach chosen by the young Jesús Fiochi to surf, creating a unique milestone in the history of Spain, as on that day surfing arrived in Spain for the first time.

From 15th June to 15th September, the beach has a fixed medical post in lifeguard and first aid module, as well as a non-assistance ambulance. Weekends from the 1st to the 30th, a basic or advanced life support ambulance.
