Gran Casino Sardinero

A clear example of the Belle Époque

The Gran Casino is located in the Plaza de Italia, in the heart of El Sardinero. It was built in 1916 under the design of the Cantabrian architect Eloy Martínez del Valle, following the stylistic canons of the French Belle Époque.

Its classical lines, white colour and imposing towers and staircase give the building a majestic touch, symbolising the prosperity of the city at that time. It functioned as a Casino until 1939, and after a break it reopened its doors in 1978 as a gambling establishment, restaurant and nightclub attended by representatives of the wealthy classes of Santander.

It also has an exhibition hall where different artists exhibit their work: painting, sculpture and photography. Various cultural events are organised on its premises.
