Santander offers a great variety of nightlife in various different areas although none are far from each other:
Puertochico area
This area includes a large number of streets offering a wide variety of establishments of different styles.
Many start the night at Puertochico to then make their way to the streets of Hernán Cortés, Peña Herbosa, or Bonifaz which all run parallel to each other. The first two are known for their bars and restaurants for tapas or a set menu, while the last named stands out for its restaurants offering menus including all kinds of dishes.
This area also includes the streets of Arrabal and El Medio, which are both very near the Plaza Porticada and known for their tapas bars. Close by stands the Del Este Market with its bars and others of the same type. If you like dining on nibbles in a quiet atmosphere, don’t forget to come this way.

Plaza Cañadío
Many start the night here. If you have been having supper in one of the nearby streets and want to have a drink somewhere and chat with friends, you’re in the right place. If the night becomes lively you can go to any of the places on the plaza or its side streets.

Río de la Pila
Did you know that it was in this area that la marejada arose? It was a movement of the 1970s and 1980s that included music ranging from punk to techno-pop. There’s nothing left of that know, but it continues to be one of the most popular streets for young people. Here the most modern bars rub shoulders with the most alternative ones.

Calle del Sol
If you are looking for an atmosphere that is completely different to any of the above, this is definitely your street. Here you will find places with different styles where with any luck you can enjoy live music. This is a good area both for listening to good music and for quieter places where you can talk.

El Sardinero
Although many only think of it as an area for strolling and going to the beach, El Sardinero is a good place to have a quiet drink. You can have supper at one of its establishments, have a glass of wine or an ice-cream, or if you prefer go to the Casino for a different kind of night.
